Blessing & traditional Aboriginal smoking ceremony means warm welcome for Goldfields’ newest residents

A traditional Aboriginal smoking ceremony and blessing warmly welcomed some of the Goldfields’ newest residents into the world, with a local mum reminding the new parents to ask for help when they need it. Speaking at the annual Welcome to the World lunch this week, young mum of two Joyce Ashwin said the event was an opportunity to appreciate the Aboriginal culture into which the children were born . Ms Ashwin shared her story of transitioning from being a full-time mum to getting back to work, reminding the mothers not to be ashamed to ask for support when they needed it. She said while parenthood was hard work, support from the community made the journey an easier one. Ms Ashwin’s talk was followed by some advice from local pastor Jarrod Dimer, who shared a verse from the Bible reminding the new parents how important their guidance is in their children’s lives. Mr Dimer gave a blessing to each of the babies, who also received gifts and certificates at the event. Children from East Kalgoorlie Primary School sang a heartwarming rendition of I Am Australian, and were gifted basketballs as thanks for the performance.
