Tony Galati’s story to hit the musical stage with performance at Harvey Recreation and Cultural Centre

Tony Galati is known for a lot of things — his decades of potato production, his chain of grocery stores and the owner of WA’s most famous pair of eyebrows.

However, the spud king is also the subject of a theatrical production, which is set to visit the South West this week.

Tony Galati The Musical will hit centre stage at the Harvey Recreation and Cultural Centre on Saturday night as part of a nine-stop tour across regional WA.

The production, which had two sold out seasons at Perth’s Fringe World festival, follows the story of the blue-singlet-wearing farmer taking on the fat cats’ control of the State’s potato market.

The show has been by event organisers as one for the underdogs, inspiring all to push the boundaries and stand up for what you believe in.

The cast is headlined by Thomas Papathanassiou, who plays the thick-eyebrowed protagonist in the production.

He said they were extremely excited to be bringing the musical to Harvey after a two-year wait.

“There are so many regional communities where farming and family are central to life and that’s what this show is really about,” he said.

“The show really hits home for people in fantastic communities like Harvey”.

Papathanassiou said audiences could expect an entertaining and fast-paced show suitable for the whole family.

“It’s hilarious and with amazing original songs, but it also has a warmth and humility about it — it stays with you,” he said.

Audiences are also promised some Perth-related jokes as well as a singing potato.

Papathanassiou’s duet with the vocal vegetable is one of his highlights of the performance.

“(It) is just such incredibly good writing and a super enjoyable moment for me and the audience,” he said.

“It’s funny and poignant with a strong message about resilience in the face of adversity, something we can all relate to and learn from.”

Audiences will be invited to an Italian-themed event following the event and provided an opportunity to mingle with the cast. They will also be invited to take a picture at the Tony Galati photo booth.

Harvey Shire president Paul Gillett said he was excited to see the show coming to the region.

“It is fantastic to see more and more of these shows which usually target major cities, expanding out and connecting with regional communities,” he said

“A story about a WA battler is something we can all resonate with and how better to do it than with friends and family while enjoying a laugh and a fun sing-along.”
