Novice and experienced yogis are welcome to celebrate the United Nations’ International Day of Yoga in Denmark on Sunday.

The United Nations proclaimed June 21 as an annual event in 2014.

This is the second year the town’s yoga teachers have teamed up to offer free classes from sundown to sunset to promote the physical, mental and spiritual benefits of the ancient practice, which originated in India.

A wide variety of yoga styles will be showcased from 6am to 6pm at Golden Hill Steiner School hall, as well as talks, meditation, food and live music.

Yoga teachers will be available to share their knowledge with participants, including Patricia Roux.

Ms Roux took up yoga 12 years ago while living in India.

She said she quickly became hooked, practising twice daily, and still rolls out her mat at least once a day.

“It can be a powerful and effective health tool,” Ms Roux said.

“It can regulate and stabilise emotions and aid the immune system, digestion, sleep and the nervous system.”

Registration is not required, visit denmarkyoga.com for the timetable.
