With the whale watching season starting in a few weeks, Albany Ocean Adventures owner Paul Guest expects plenty of action as whale numbers continue to rise

June 1 is considered the start of the season and Mr Guest will begin taking loads of passengers into the Southern Ocean with the hope of seeing humpbacks, southern wrights and the occasional blue whale.

Mr Guest said the whales typically started their journey up the WA coast from between Esperance and Albany and numbers varies each season.

“They basically come up and hit the south coast and then they’ll travel along the coast heading west along Cape Leeuwin and then up the west coast,” he said

“With humpbacks it can vary from a couple to 20 or 30, depending on the situation —they build up sometimes”

Mr Guest said the beauty of his job was that it’s something new every day.

“We’ve had mothers coming up to us and poking their heads out of the water and coming over to the boat, then swimming back to their calves,” he said.

“We see all sorts of things, you just don’t know what you’re going to see, every day’s different-that’s the best part about it,”

Mr Guest sad they used a number of tactics to ensure each trip was a success

“We’ll head over towards Seal rock, go through Frenchman’s bay we might talk to the guys at Whale World and we’ve got a bloke that sits up on the hill,” he said.
