People are being warned not to swim or fish in part of Denmark’s Wilson Inlet after an overflow of waste water from a Water Corporation pump station.

A Water Corporation spokeswoman said early estimates showed 20,000 litres of waste water had flooded from their pump station on Zimmermann Street, after it was reported by a member of the public yesterday afternoon.

An as-yet unknown quantity of the 20,000 litre leak has flowed into a creek which feeds into Wilson Inlet.

The Water Corporation are advising residents and visitors to avoid swimming and fishing between Denmark Rivermouth Caravan Park and a gazebo upstream.

The Water Corporation and Shire of Denmark took water samples yesterday, and warning signs have been placed along the contaminated area.

A corporation spokeswoman said crews are working to clean up the spill and the cause of the overflow is still being investigated.

The Department of Health will notify the Water Corporation and the Shire of Denmark when the warning signs can be taken down and swimming and fishing safely resumed.

The corporation apologised for any inconvenience caused by the incident.
