Teammates of Jay Muscat will formally recognise his glowing contribution on the volleyball court in a tribute match honouring the popular Albany teenager this Thursday night.

The 17-year-old, who was fatally mauled by a shark while spearfishing at Three Stripes near Cheyne Beach in December, was a talented and passionate volleyballer who played in the Albany Volleyball Association and represented Albany Senior High School at country week last year.

Jay's indoor beach volleyball team Warriors and the ASHS boys' country week volleyball side, known as The Hornets, will square off in the tribute match. Jay was a captain and fairest and best of last year's ASHS team.

Event organiser Rebecca Porteous, who played alongside Jay in the Warriors, said both teams had agreed the match would be a fitting tribute.

"To me he was just so outgoing and he had so much passion for the game," she said.

"He was always encouraging, would come give you a high five or handshake and he just put in the effort as a team player."

Ms Porteous said Jay's family - including father Mark, mother Sheryl and sister Ebony - would take part in the match for Warriors, the team Jay was a member of for four seasons.

She said the school had also thrown its support behind the match to honour one of their former students.

"They're pretty excited to be involved," she said.

"We've had a lot of interest and school support.

"He will be missed on the court as he played such a big part."

The match will be held at the Indoor Beach Volleyball Centre on Barker Road at 6.30pm.

Spectators are encouraged to attend, with all donations going to the school's volleyball team participating in country week this year.
