Vintage classic a crowd pleaser

SHANNON HAMPTONAlbany Advertiser

Hundreds of beautifully restored vintage vehicles will roll through the streets of Albany at the weekend for the annual Albany Classic Motor Event.

The event, now in its 24th year, is expected to attract between 15,000 and 18,000 visitors from across the State.

This year 130 competitors have signed up for the event, 18 of them Albany residents.

Albany Classic organiser Phil Shephard said spectators could expect to see historic cars from WA motorsport history, from Falcons and Monaros to Minis and open-wheel racing cars.

“There’s a very good mix of vehicles and they have all been lovingly cared for by their drivers,” he said. Driver Glenn Badger will compete in his bright orange 1970 MK1 Ford Escort and 1970 XW GT Ford Falcon.

The motor enthusiast said he enjoyed every aspect of the event.

“I love the preparation leading up to it and just seeing the crowds there,” he said.

“Also the camaraderie, meeting a bunch of blokes who like to do the same sort of thing I love to do — I’ve made a lot of friends doing this sort of stuff.”

The event begins on Saturday with a Mt Clarence Hill Climb from 9am, and the main event starts at 10am on Sunday.

Volunteers are still required to set up and break down the track.

Those interested can learn more at Ken Stone Motor Trimmers, 20 Prior Street, today at 5pm.
