Triathlon: Gee uses Albany race as Singapore practice

CAMERON NEWBOLDAlbany Advertiser

Perth triathlete Mike Gee won his first major crown in the Great Southern after taking out the 2012 Laminex Albany Classic triathlon on Sunday.

Gee was impressed with his performance, which he hopes to transfer into more winning form in Singapore in two weeks time.

Gee will compete in a high-quality triathlon in Singapore and said, naturally, this was the best way to shape up for the gruelling event.

“This is part of the South West tri-series but I am using it as more preparation for Singapore,” he said.

“I come to Albany a fair bit, mostly for holidays but it was quite nice to win.”

Part of his winning formula was mounting his challenge in the first leg of the event.

“It was nice to have a few waves and I had planned to get a break in the swim,” he said.

“The waves were not a massive tactical difference but I did get the break I wanted.”

Sunday was Gee’s fourth appearance at the annual event which again attracted a large number of competitors.

“It really was a good race and hats off to everyone for their effort,” Gee said post-race.
