Investment in transport infrastructure and upgrades to the telecommunications network in the Great Southern are vital to future growth, a report released by the Committee for Economic Development of Australia last week suggests.

The report, titled Regional Development in WA, provides an insight into the strengths and challenges in each of the State’s nine regions and outlines five actions to overcome the barriers to growth in regional WA.

The report indicates a thriving small business sector and primary production are the economic foundations of the Great Southern.

“Primary production is the backbone of the economy, including grain and livestock, which is the region’s main industry and largest employer,” the report stated.

“Other significant primary industries in the region include plantation blue gum timber, fishing, aquaculture, viticulture and horticulture.

“The region has one of the most dynamic small business sectors in the State, which brings diversity and contributes to the region’s economic resilience.”

Education was an area the report indicated could be improved in the Great Southern.

“The region has the potential to expand its high-quality education offering through the digitally connected world, and by attracting more international students,” the report said.

“A focus on indigenous education, training and employment is vital to address a significantly higher overall level of disadvantage in terms of socioeconomic status.

“Attracting skills to the region is also essential for increased growth,”

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman, who unveiled the report at a CEDA conference in Perth, said it was a culmination of a two-year regional event series.

“The final report captures the key findings and outcomes of the series and outlines an action plan for capitalising on opportunities to ensure sustainable, long-term growth for our regions,” he said.
