The logical winners
Albany's John Calvin School has shrugged off competition from more than 2600 other students from 85 WA schools to bring home victory in the Science and Engineering Challenge WA finals.
The finals of the competition run by Engineers Australia were held at Curtin University on February 26, after a series of one-day challenges late last year.
Year 9 and 10 students worked in teams of three or four to design or solve logic-based problems.
The 22-member John Calvin squad was the smallest in the competition, principal Pete Witten said.
“I would attribute the success to science teacher Tim Schoof’s enthusiasm. He’s an excellent teacher and he’s done an excellent job with the students.
“It’s a combination of things in terms of group work, enthusiasm and leadership and basically an interest and excitement with science.
Mr Witten said he had to give some credit to the man upstairs.
“I would like to express some humble thankfulness for the blessings that we receive from the Lord. It’s a Christian school, so we’re attributing the success of our work simply to the blessings we receive from our God,” he said.
The national finals will be held in Victoria in October.
