Students at Flinders Park Primary School are cycling to raise awareness and money to fight children's cancers.

Flikes, the school team, is taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge Australia, riding for past and present students who have been affected by cancer.

The team is ranked 11th nationally for funds raised and first in the school's category, with close to $9000 raised, exceeding their initial goal of $1500.

Team member Tahlia Watson said her classmates were raising money for students at Flinders who have had cancer, such as her friend and classmate Annika Williams.

"I've been raising money for my friend by riding around my block lots and doing big rides around the school and Middleton Beach," she said.

Tahlia's personal goal was to raise $500 for the team and ride 100km. She has raised $316 and ridden 64km so far.

Her friend Annika was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in April 2012, when she was eight.

"I feel very happy and proud of my school and friends for riding for me," Annika said.

The importance of finding a cure for children's cancers reminds the students why they are riding in the challenge.

"We are all raising money and awareness and by doing this ride we are influencing more people to get involved in community fundraisers," Tahlia said.

"I think it's really important for kids to get out and ride their bikes and have fun while supporting a really good cause."

Teacher and team co-ordinator Janet Davies said she was incredibly proud of the students.

"The children are so enthusiastic. It's incredible and it's nice to see that they are willing to give back to the community and participate in community fundraisers," she said.
