Speedway: Albany to host nation's best

Just a week after confirming it would hold a round of the National Super Sedan Series, the Albany Speedway Club has announced it will host a round of the nation’s best speedway series.

Attwell Park Speedway in Albany will hold round 12 of the World Series Sprintcars as the series celebrates its 25-year silver anniversary.

Shane Collins, part of the WSS management team, said the chance to bring the series to Albany was a fantastic result.

“To be able to bring WSS to Albany for the first time is a great announcement,” Collins said.

“We are very excited to be coming to Albany and we will certainly be putting on a show for the crowd when we are there.”

Australia’s best Sprintcar drivers will converge on Albany on February 4, 2012, with nine drivers already contracted to the nation’s richest series.

Australian champion Brooke Tatnell has confirmed his commitment along with defending WSS champion Robbie Farr and stars Max Dumesny, Trevor Green, Steven Lines and David Murcott.

Albany Speedway Club representative and joint promoter Graeme McSweeney said this event will be huge.

“It will be huge for the town, it will bring people to Albany who have never been here and put the club on the map,” McSweeney said.

“The calibre of cars, teams, transporters is first-class and there will be some exhilarating racing.”

McSweeney said the club was taking a massive step in bring this event to the Great Southern.

“The club is hoping the people, town and businesses support it,” he said.

“This is a huge thing to make happen and it is the direction the club needs to go.”

He said most of the big name drivers will race on the Attwell Park clay for the very first time.

The Albany round will be aired on Foxtel channel SPEED while the WSS will also bring their mega TV screen to display the 8racing.

The club is looking for a major sponsor for the event.
