Slip, slop, slap .. and raise funds
This Australia Day will be an excuse to slip, slop, slap and have some fun in the sun and sand, all for a good cause.
For the seventh consecutive year, Middleton Beach will host the Australia Day Fun Run, sponsored by Act Belong Commit, which aims to help raise awareness of men’s health and wellbeing issues.
The event raises money for Albany’s Men’s Resource Centre and last year collected more than $2000.
Centre manager and senior community educator Grant Westthorp said the run was a great way to kick off Australia Day, with people of all ages and fitness levels encouraged to have a go.
“The Men’s Resource Centre has a vision for men to live longer, healthier and more fulfilling lives,” Mr Westthorp said.
“Part of that community health message is to get active and that lines up with the Act Belong Commit message.”
Participants can complete the 8.2km open run along Middleton Beach bike path, starting at 9am, or tackle the shorter 4.8km run that begins at 9.15am.
With more than 120 participants last year, Mr Westthorp said the event was a great way to bring people together.
Local comedian and author John Doust will MC the run and Mr Westthorp emphasised the day was about having fun.
The first male and female runner in the open category will win a $750 prize, while spot prizes, including vouchers to Mt Romance and Act Belong Commit merchandise, will be given to short run participants.
Money raised helps fund the resource centre’s programs, including wellness checks and cooking classes.
Registration is $20 for adults and $10 for children.
Register beefore the event at the Men’s Resource Centre office or on-site from 7am on the day.
