Blake Watson is a step closer to fulfilling his dream of becoming an internationally renowned signwriter after he won gold at the WorldSkills regional competition in Perth recently.

The Albany talent claimed the State's top title for his precision and artistic flair in designing, manufacturing and installing signs for vehicles.

Mr Watson, 19, said the secret to success was practice.

"It's one of those things - if you are super keen and interested, it makes it quite easy," he said.

"Being interested means you work hard and practise, it's intricate, busy and flat out, but that's why I love it."

The competition involved three projects, including vinyl wrapping, panel installation and a technical graphic design component.

Mr Watson took up his apprenticeship at Eyerite Signs in 2011 and was awarded WA Apprentice of the Year for 2015.

But he said his ultimate dream is to one day work with his own V8 super car team.

"My interest came from racing speedway, I have always been interested in race cars, all the signs and colours," he said.

"And my future goal is to work with V8s, but I'll just take it as it comes.

"I think everyone has their own thing that they are good at; I think I am good at some sections and not so flash at others, but as long as you enjoy it and are super keen."

Mr Watson will take his talents over east next year to compete in the National WorldSkills competition in Melbourne in October.

"It will be a challenge, but I'm really looking forward to it," he said.
