An Albany photographer has captured an unusual weather phenomenon on camera.

Megan Shephard snapped this shot of a rainbow appearing along the ground at the base of Bluff Knoll.

Bureau of Meteorology Albany station manager Jason Balhorn said rainbows did not always take the common arc.

“The rainbow is simply a rainbow on the ground; they can form pretty much anywhere,” he said. Mr Balhorn said rainbows were caused by suspended water particles refracting and reflecting light to create the optical illusion.

“Rainbows can be caused by many forms of airborne water,” he said. “These include not only rain, but also mist, spray and airborne dew.”
