Runners to pound Denmark roads

JORDAN GERRANSAlbany Advertiser

More than 150 runners will be pounding the pavement around Lake Powell and along Lower Denmark and Elleker-Grassmere Road this Sunday as part of the 19th running of the Elleker Half Marathon.

The half-marathon and 10km road race will start and finish at the Elleker Hall and is organised by Albany Athletics Club.

About 175 runners entered last year, with event organiser Simon Fretton expecting a similar field this weekend.

“People come to Albany to compete in the event from Perth, Esperance and pretty much the whole of the South West and Wheatbelt,” he said.

This race is one of the main events on the Albany Athletics Club calendar.

“It’s the longest event that the club puts on, being a half-marathon,” Fretton said.

“The club gets together and organises itself.”

Fretton encouraged both beginners and experienced runners to compete.

There will be prizes for first and second men and women in both the half-marathon and 10km events, with additional prizes awarded to the first five finishers in both events.

Entries are open and runners should log on to the club website www.albayaths.asn.au and go to the Asics Elleker Half link.

The start time is 8.30am this Sunday morning, with late entries accepted on the day, but late fees will apply.
