Football legend and AFL Hall of Fame member Barry Cable will ride into Albany next month as part of his 1000km venture for Alzheimer’s research.

The avid cyclist, who has been spurred on by his experiences of seeing the effects of the devastating disease on friends through his life, will see the triple Sandover medallist ride 1000km in seven days starting on June 4.

Barry Cable’s Ride for Memories is in support of the McCusker Alzheimer’s Research Foundation and will start in Esperance and go through Great Southern towns Hopetoun, Jerramungup and onto Albany on June 7.

From there, Cable, who will be joined by good friend and former MasterChef Australia contestant Josh Catalano along the way, will ride to Tambellup, Narrogin, York and onto Perth.

The longest leg is the first of 194km from Esperance to Hopetoun with the shortest the final leg to Perth from York.

The 72-year-old believed he was ready for the gruelling ride.

“I’ve been doing quite a lot of it in the lead-up even though I’m getting on,” he said.

“We have both had our programs to prepare, so I’m confident we can do the journey.”

The triple Sandover medallist will visit the North Albany Football Club while stopping in Albany on June 7.

“We’re meeting all the people in the different areas, so we will be spreading the message as well,” he said.

“The fact I’ve known people who have lived with it, have gone through it and have passed on due to Alzheimer’s and you appreciate how bad it can be, so I do whatever I can.”

There are 353,800 Australians living with dementia and Alzheimer’s.
