Regional Express Airlines is offering discounted fares for the Albany to Perth route, which they took over in February, in an effort to increase affordability for the Albany community.

The promotion offers one-way flights for $151, down from the standard Rex Net fare of $172, for passengers booking two months in advance. The offer is also being extended to unsold seats the day before departure.

A Rex spokeswoman said the initiative, which began on May 13, is being run despite many flights being full already.

“While many flights have been almost full, Rex operates 46 flights per week between Albany and Perth and there will be sufficient seats available for this worthwhile community initiative,” she said.

Rex Flex passengers now have a checked baggage allowance of up to 23kg guaranteed for uplift, effective May 1, up from 15kg.

Rex has also submitted a proposal to the City of Albany to partner in the initiative and hopes a favourable decision will lead to this becoming a permanent feature of their fare structure.

City of Albany chief executive Andrew Sharpe said the proposal was expected to be heard at the next council meeting.

“Officers are working through the proposal to prepare a late item to go before council next Tuesday night,” he said.

“The City remains committed to working with REX to grow passenger numbers and keep airfares as low as possible on the Albany-Perth flight route,”
