The Shire of Plantagenet will put its draft budget proposals to the public next Tuesday for comment, with a planned 3 per cent rise in council rates.

The 2016-17 draft budget totals $22 million, up from $20.4 million the year before, and comprises $14.8 million in operating expenses and capital expenditure of $7.2 million.

With Sounness Park nearing completion, the Shire is moving to staged improvements of Frost Park including ceiling and wall repairs and buying new chairs and tables.

Plant equipment proposals for the new financial year include the replacement of a four-tonne tip truck for parks and gardens and a ride-on mower.

With an increase in rates revenue of 3 per cent as the Shire increases the overall level of fees and charges using the Local Government Cost Index, rubbish collection charges would increase from $190 to $195, while the minimum rate would increase to $860, up from $835.

The level at which rates rise is reviewed annually and considers a range of factors such as the current economic climate, rates in nearby local governments, funds required to maintain planned expenditure, and the levels of relevant cost indices.

Proposals are preliminary at this stage and are subject to change after public discussion and a more informed financial position closer to the adoption of the budget in July.

The information session will be held at 6.30pm on Tuesday, May 24 at the Council Chambers on Lowood Road Mt Barker and a copy of the proposals is available at the Shire office or at www.plantagenet.wa.gov.au .
