Polonia, Royals break drought

Polonia and Royals both got their first wins of the 2016 Great Southern Soccer Association men’s open competition on Sunday.

Royals played the winless Rovers and got off to a strong start, holding a 3-0 lead at the half.

In the second half Rovers fought back with two goals to Jack McNamee, however a strong performance from Nathan Griffiths, with two goals, ensured the Royals got the points with a 5-3 victory.

In the other Sunday fixture Polonia got their season moving with a 5-0 win over PR United.

It was a consistent performance that had them leading 2-0 at half-time before finishing strongly with three goals in the second half.

James Hudson was dominant all day up forward, bagging a hat-trick for his hard work. Rowan Burrell and Cameron Spence also found the back of the net.

It was a crucial win for Polonia that keeps them in touch with PR United who sit one point ahead in fourth spot.

The top of the table face-off between Phoenix and Caledonian was played last night; both sides were looking to stay undefeated.

In the women’s League A round 4 fixtures last Friday Caledonian held on for a tough victory against Rovers. Up 4-0 at half-time Caledonian got a huge scare in the second half as Rovers piled on four goals, however Caledonian managed one morel to win 5-4.

Leah Dunwoodie scored a hat-trick while Brigitte Morgan had two goals for Caledonian. Bridget Berry snagged two goals for Rovers.

Phoenix edged Polonia with a strong second half to win 3-1. With scores level at half-time, Phoenix scored two goals in the last half to maintain second spot on the ladder.

Royals put in a spirited effort to go down 1-0 against the undefeated Denmark who continue their quest for a third straight premiership.

In the women’s League B Grammar Blue won 3-2 against Royals and Polonia White registered a convincing 5-0 win against Rovers.

In round 3 of the men’s Masters league Denmark got up 2-0 against Old Boys while Cross Keys United and The Vets fought out a 2-2 draw.
