Albany police are appealing to the public to be vigilant after a spate of burglaries in Bayonet Head over the past week.

There were 17 burglaries and 34 thefts last week, which Albany police Senior Sergeant Derek Grimes said was unusually high.

“It is higher than what we certainly want and what it has been in recent weeks and we want to put a stop to it as early as we can,” he said.

Sen Sgt Grimes said the burglary spree could be drug related.

“We know there is a direct link between drugs and burglaries and stolen property … but that is not necessarily to say that is occurring in this case,” he said.

“People steal for different reasons but regardless of the reason it is not right and we want to lock them up.”

Cash, handbags, laptops and jewellery are among the items snatched from unlocked cars and homes, which has prompted police to increase their patrols and urge people to secure their valuables.

Sen Sgt Grimes urged residents to report any suspicious activity to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Albany police station on 9892 9200 immediately.
