An Albany man accused of leading police on a high-speed chase on the eve of Easter is behind bars after a court appearance on Saturday.

Carl Kelly, 33, was remanded in custody after allegedly reaching speeds close to 180km/h during the pursuit which police had to re-engage three times before eventually apprehending him in Lower King.

Police allege Mr Kelly failed to stop after a traffic crash on the corner of Chester Pass Road and Kelly Street at 1.10pm on Thursday and fled in a silver Holden statesman sparking the police chase.

Officers attempted to intercept the car but lost sight on Menang Road where Mr Kelly was allegedly clocked at 174km/h.

The pursuit was re-engaged when the car was spotted on Down Road and continued down Albany Highway and onto Millbrook Road, disrupting the Easter Fatigue Roadstop as two police cars gave chase.

The car eventually came to a halt after blowing a tyre on Millbrook Road and Mr Kelly was apprehended as he reversed into a police car causing minor damage.

He faced charges of three counts of reckless driving, three counts of failing to stop to avoid police pursuit, driving with a cancelled licence, false number plates, driving an unlicensed vehicle and obstructing police when he appeared in Albany Magistrate’s Court on Saturday morning and was remanded in custody.

Seven vehicles were seized by police in the Great Southern throughout the long weekend including two for hoon offences of reckless driving.
