Two people were thrown from a Mazda 2 on South Coast Highway when the car veered off the road and hit a tree early on Sunday.

Traffic Sergeant Peter May said seven people were in the vehicle that crashed at 6.37am in the Marbelup area.

“Two of the people were ejected from the car and another in the boot was seriously injured,” he said.

It is understood the car was returning to Albany from a party in Denmark on Saturday night.

Sgt May said an investigation was being conducted.

Meanwhile, the driver of a van that was written off after crashing into a tree near Walpole on Wednesday was lucky to walk away unharmed, according to police.

A 33-year-old Singaporean man was driving a Toyota Tarago along South Western Highway when the vehicle drifted across the road and hit the tree 20km north of Walpole about 1.30pm.

Walpole police officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant David Wall said the 31-year-old female passenger in the back of the van was lucky to escape with only a broken arm and large slash to her scalp.

“They are very, very lucky,” Sen. Sgt Wall said.

“If the tree had hit the driver’s side of the vehicle or if she had been in the front passenger seat, I believe we would be dealing with a fatality.”

Police and emergency services attended the scene after a passing motorist raised the alarm and two off-duty paramedics administered first-aid to the woman, who was taken to Manjimup then Perth for treatment.

Sen. Sgt Wall said police suspected that fatigue was a contributing factor but inquiries were continuing.

“It certainly highlights the dangers of tourists travelling on our roads who are not used to the long distances between towns,” he said.
