Pacing: Best New Year ever

KEIR TUNBRIDGEAlbany Advertiser

A bumper crowd of about 1600 enjoyed the start of the new year at the Albany Harness Racing Club on Friday night.

The club’s general manager Colin Park said the New Year’s Eve meet was very successful with a well-behaved crowd.

He said the bookmakers took more than at previous New Year’s Eve meets.

“It was by far the best crowd – even the old-timers have said that was one of the best crowds that had ever been there,” he said.

“There was no trouble, there was a fantastic atmosphere and great horses and it was really, really good.

“It’s great to see that the people of Albany are getting behind us.”

The next harness meet is on Friday, January 14.

“We have another 20 horses coming down, and they’re all great horses,” Park said.

With continued support, Park said the Albany track would remain open and avoid the plight of Geraldton’s paceway, which closed last July.

“We have a club that’s going to bring harness racing alive,” he said.
