Outgoing mayor thanks community

Incumbent mayor Milton Evans will completely distance himself from local government after being ousted from the Albany City Council at the weekend.

Mr Evans was elected to the council in 1999 and re-elected in 2003 before becoming mayor in 2007.

He led the council through what was arguably its most controversial period, a time he describes as riddled with “unprecedented difficulties”.

When Mr Evans re-nominated himself he had the option of putting his name down for the vacant seat in the Frederickstown ward should Dennis Wellington be elected as mayor.

He said he chose not to put his name down for the seat because he was fully committed to the mayoral position.

“I am out of local government now,” he said.

“I wish the Albany community well and I thank everyone that has been supportive over the years.

“The new council have a lot of work to do yet and I hope they are cohesive and move forward for the benefit of the community.”

Mr Evans is currently a member of the Albany Centenary of Anzac Alliance board.

He said he would relinquish his position unless the alliance requested he continue to be involved in the planning of Albany’s centenary commemorations.
