New Tigers' coach hungry for more success

The new coach of the Railways Football Club says he will be concentrating on avoiding a premiership hangover as the Tigers aim to capitalise on their first flag in 26 years by creating their own dynasty of success.

Wayne Stubber, the club’s under-17s coach for the past two seasons, has been announced as the new Tigers coach, taking over from premiership duo Kim Mayfield and Tim Alvin who stepped down in September.

The former Borden league coach and player said one of his first orders of business would be ensuring the club remain hungry for more success, and not be content with just the sole flag.

“The window of opportunity is certainly open for more success over the next few seasons,” he said.

“It was really noticeable on grand final day that everyone was so happy to win a flag but that is only the beginning, we have to try and sustain that.”

Stubber said he was confident of retaining the majority of their 2012 premiership side after early indications there would be a number of players walking away.

Having last coached Borden in 2008 and as a player-coach in 2005, Stubber said the decision to return to coach a senior side was an easy one after being earmarked by Mayfield and Alvin to take the reigns.

“When they stood down they came and approached me and said they would be a lot more confident stepping down if I was going to take it on,” he said.

“To me it’s about carrying on from where they left off. I cannot see much changing.

“It’s a pretty young squad and I’ve a got a really good rapport with them.” Veteran Scott Hillman will replace Stubber as coach of the under-17s but the club was yet to confirm coaches for colts and reserves or find an assistant league coach.

Across the road, arch rival Royals has confirmed Darrell Panizza will continue into his 15th season at the helm after being preferred over former captain Cleve Humphries.
