Planning Minister Donna Faragher has requested amendments to the City of Albany’s controversial Middleton Beach Activity Centre proposal.

The local planning scheme amendment, which would allow multi-use residential and commercial developments, was approved by the council earlier this year.

On Thursday, Ms Faragher said she had considered the amendment and requested modifications to address community concerns.

“There is a high level of community interest in the Middleton Beach Activity Centre and it is important that we get the planning of the site right,” she said.

“The changes include those recommended by the City of Albany to address concerns raised during public consultation.

“They will ensure good design that is sympathetic to the surrounding area, and contributes to a vibrant activity centre for residents and visitors alike.”

Modifications to the amendment include shifting the eastern boundary up to eight metres to the west to reduce the impact of any development on the foreshore and Three Anchors Cafe, and protect the Norfolk Pines.

Other changes include a three-storey building heigh limit facing the foreshore and a maximum of 12 storeys facing Mt Adelaide.

Any building proposed between five and 12 storeys must undergo a visual impact assessment.

The City of Albany has 42 days to complete the modifications prior to re-submitting the amendment for Ministerial approval.
