McGowan talk to focus on tourism

The tourism sector will be at the forefront of WA Leader of the Opposition Mark McGowan’s vision for jobs in the Great Southern when he addresses the topic in Albany next week.

Mr McGowan will speak on his vision for jobs in the region at an Albany Chamber of Commerce and Industry breakfast at the Princess Royal Sailing Club on Tuesday.

The recently announced Labor Plan for Jobs will be covered in relation to the region.

“Like all of WA, unemployment is a big issue in Albany,” Mr McGowan said.

“We need to unlock the potential of areas like Albany and do a better job of selling it to the rest of the world.

“It’s a beautiful part of our State whose tourist potential has yet to be realised.”

The plan outlines a $425 million investment into State tourism over a five-year period.

The investment will also include $45 million per year for destination marketing to establish WA as one of the world’s great tourist destinations.

“(It) will provide the industry with certainty going forward, attract thousands of extra visitors and create new jobs, particularly in the local hospitality sector,” Mr McGowan said.

“Albany has been crying out for this kind of visionary plan for jobs.”

Tourism sector development would have a focus on the local cruise ship industry, he said.

“We will develop more land-side destination options for the cruise ship sector at WA’s regional ports, generating additional visitor spend and local jobs,” he said.

“Stronger support for the cruise ship sector would create more opportunities for on-shore activities for visitors, such as visits to Albany.

“It’s all about diversifying the economy, giving small business a fair go and creating jobs in areas like tourism.”

The event will start at 7am and cost $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
