Man falls from roof trying to flee cops

Tim EdmundsAlbany Advertiser

Police expect to charge an Albany man with burglary within days after being released from hospital having suffered a fractured neck trying to escape police and falling from the roof of his home last week.

Police arrested a 35-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman less than an hour after viewing security footage at Harvey Norman where $20,000 of electronic goods were allegedly stolen in the early hours of Friday.

It is alleged two offenders wearing balaclavas gained access to the store from the roof but fell through the ceiling, causing damage to the store before smashing display cabinets with a small axe and leaving with iPhones, iPads, a MacBook and Samsung phones.

Officers found the alleged burglars at a home in Discovery Drive in Spencer Park, where the man tried to hide in his roof.

Police say the man tried to jump from the roof but his foot became caught on a fence, causing him to fall on his head and be hospitalised with a serious neck injury.

The property was recovered and returned to the store.

The woman was bailed in Albany Magistrate’s Court on Monday after appearing on two counts of aggravated burglary and stealing and will appear again on November 16.

The man is expected to be charged when he is released from hospital in Perth later this week.
