Perth Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi told an 80-strong crowd on Tuesday that Albany should sell its “allure” as a tourist destination.

Ms Scaffidi was joined at the University of WA Albany lecture by Committee for Perth chief executive Marion Fulker, who spoke about the influence the non-political think tank had over policy and development in Perth.

The mayor spoke of the close relationship City of Perth had with the committee.

She said Albany was her favourite WA city outside Perth but it needed to maximise the tourism potential of its landscape.

She suggested a new marketing motto, “the allure of Albany” to help the city “kick arse” and become more competitive among other regional centres to help gain Federal funding.

She said while Albany might not want to grow too much, development was crucial and hailed Paul Terry, who renovated the Esplanade Hotel in the 1990s, as a visionary.
