The Great Southern Distilling Company has continued its dazzling run in 2016, claiming three silvers and a bronze medal at the International Wine and Spirit Competition.

GSDC claimed the most medals of any Australian distiller, with Melbourne’s Starward Whisky gaining a silver outstanding gong.

The Albany-based distillery received silver outstanding for its Limeburners Single Malt Heavy Peated Whisky, two silvers for its Limeburners Single Malt Whisky — Port Cask Strength and Tiger Snake Australian Whiskey and a bronze for the Limeburners Single Malt Whisky-Director’s Cut.

GSDC director Cameron Syme said it was another proud moment for the distillery.

“It’s the second year in a row that Limeburners has performed at the top of the Australian whisky scene, which is something our team is very proud of,” he said.

Mr Syme believes Australian whisky is on the rise.

“With access to premium barley, prime Australian wine barrels, soft, pure water and dynamic maturation environments, there’s no reason why Australian whisky can’t be a global leader,” he said.

The award-winning distillery has been in operation since 2004 in Albany and now employs 14 people and has more than $15 million invested in the region.

The distillery’s recognition on an international stage follows on from being named Champion Australian Distillery and Champion Australian Whisky at the 2016 Australian Distilled Spirits Awards in April.

The Heavy Peat adds to its back- to-back Champion Australian Whisky title with silver outstanding, further legitimising its price tag of $700 a bottle.
