Electro dance rockers Like a Thief bring their surprisingly fresh live sound to stages and with a solid debut EP under their belt and the powerfully appealing second EP titled “Play Loud” hot of the press, 2016 is shaping up to be an epic launch pad for this high-energy outfit.

The band’s infectious mix of rock and dance has gained them fans of their great combination of classic pop/rock, 70s funk and modern electronica all blended with smooth vocals.

With extensive plans on the horizon including film clips, a live album, a headline West Coast tour, an East Coast tour and a full-length LP to name a few, the numbers are adding up, causing many people to sense Like A Thief are undoubtedly one to watch for in 2016.

Tell me about Like a Thief?

Like a Thief have been playing together in bands since high school before officially forming in mid-2013. We have supported bands like Switchfoot, Karnivool, British India and Tired and all of us boys are from Albany. As a band we continue to self-manage and tour up and down the South West coast, playing some of the region’s best venues. We are persisting to carve out a positively appealing live show for ourselves and winning new fans with every gig while proceeding to refine what we do both live and in the studio.

For those who aren’t familiar with your music, how would you describe your sounds?

What can only be described as an infectious mix of rock and dance. Like a cross between Radiohead and a rave. (Amnplify Magazine, live review)

We play our own brand of electronic dance, pop rock sounds in a high-energy stage show. We are a really fun band to watch have a sing and a dance.

How has the band evolved since forming?

We are constantly aiming for that next step, after every gig we sit down as a band and ask ourselves what can we do better? From little things like, how can we streamline our set-up or how can we engage with our audience better to bigger things like taking our live performance to the next level or leaving people with a lasting impression that Like A Thief are one to watch. As well as that, we are by far our toughest critics when it comes to our songwriting because with so much new and good music coming out (from Australia alone) our songwriting needs to be constantly evolving and improving. Our band motto when it comes to writing is, “cut the fat”; if anything doesn’t need to be there it gets axed.

What has the band been up to lately?

Like a Thief have been pretty busy lately. We recorded our second EP titled “Play Loud” in the last few months of 2015 and have just self-released that recently; however, it gets officially released through A&R on May 20 (iTunes and Spotify). As well as that, we have been ramping up our South West touring having played Albany, Margaret River, Bunbury, Rockingham, Mandurah and Perth in recent months and we have shows booked at most of those places again to support the new EP later in 2016. We also released a film clip to the first single “Escape” off the new EP and there are plans in the works to do film clips for the other tracks on the new EP as well later in 2016. So yeah we’ve been keeping busy!

You have a gig coming up the star tomorrow, what can we expect?

All original music at this gig. We play our own brand of electronic/dance/pop/rock. It’s full of energy, there’s usually lots of dancing and glow sticks and it’s always a fun night. Also on the line-up we have some mates of ours Indigo coming down from Perth. They play indie/pop/rock and they are a tight act. They write very catchy pop and always put on a great show so we’re super stoked to have them joining us. We also have a great local singer/songwriter opening the night called Jordan Welshman so we’re stoked to have him there as well.

What are the future plans for Like a Thief?

Keep doing what we’re doing. We are writing a third EP at the moment and have booked into the studio for later this year to record that. As well as keep touring, keep writing and keep refining what we love doing.

Would The Voice or XFactor be on the cards or is the band happy playing and touring?

To be 100 per cent honest, those shows are ruining our music industry. All they are is entertainment, five seconds of fame. For a solo singer/songwriter I could see them being useful to gain some exposure but as a band it’s the furthest thing from our mind. The people that make it in this industry are ones that work hard, week in week out performing (for more than one song at a time) to everyday people who are down at the pub, where people will honestly tell you if you sound terrible or not.

Stand-out highlights or moments over the time?

Being able to support some bigger bands has been a definite highlight. Supporting Switchfoot and Karnivool were probably two stand-out gigs so far.
