Young surf talent Lachy Ross was named the Emerging Regional Junior Sports Star of the Great Southern at the 2013 ANZ Sports Star Awards function at Crown Perth last month.

Lachy accepted his award in front of a large crowd and said he was thrilled to win the award.

“I was really stoked and felt privileged to have that award,” Lachy said.

“I was a bit surprised I had won. “I have definitely been improving, I had my worst year last year and that got me hungrier this year to do better at State comps.”

The smiling 15-year-old narrowly missed out on making the WA State surfing team to compete at the national titles this year, but has already set the goal to make the team in 2014.

Lachy, who goes to Denmark High School, got hooked on surfing when he was 11.

The budding young surfers’ next challenge will come at the upcoming Small Fries competition in Yallingup in the middle of January before tackling all the State series events later on in 2014.

Albany hockey product Kathryn Slattery was a nominee in the 2013 Railtrain Junior Sports Star award for her performances with the Jillaroos this year, but the talented local was not one of six finalists in the running to win the award.
