Albany Speedway Club member and Katanning young gun Kye Blight won back-to-back WA modified sedan titles after prevailing in a rain-affected State title at Ellenbrook Speedway.

Blight started the 35-lap title from pole position after notching two victories in qualifying heat races held on Friday night, April 25.

Officials held all four rounds of heat races on Friday night, which is not normally the case, due to inclement weather forecast for Saturday.

Heavy rain fell throughout Saturday, forcing the finals to be postponed and be run on the Sunday morning. The 21-year-old finished a convincing winner ahead of fellow WA driver Clint Noakes while Queensland pair Rodney Pammenter and Shane MacDonald finished third and fourth respectively.

“In trying conditions it was a relief to cross the line and win,” Blight said.

“We had a bit of a harder tyre on than the rest of the guys behind us and every restart it would take three or four laps to get warm and find that rhythm, but I was happy the longer the race went.”

Albany’s Laurie Dowsett and Aydan Trewern both retired from the race with mechanical issues after 21 laps while fellow local competitors Neville Bylund and Miranda Ball made the A-main but failed to finish.
