Albany’s Jordan McDonald powered home to one of his biggest victories in the Australasian Junior Sedan Title on Saturday, March 8.

The race at Moora Speedway also doubled as round 4 of the JSRA Smarter than Smoking Country Super Series.

With six drivers from New Zealand competing and the best junior competitors in WA, a quality field was assembled for the event but it was McDonald who dominated from start to finish.

McDonald won all three of his qualifying heats to start the 20-lap feature race on pole position.

He surrendered the lead in the race more than once but was able to get past Drew Ogle in the dying stages of the race to record a memorable win over Matthew Iwanow and fellow Albany driver Blake Watson.

The 16-year-old said he was thrilled to win such a big event given the quality of the opposition.

“It means a lot to me actually,” McDonald said.

“I went there hoping for a top four finish but to win it, I was stoked.”

Ogle’s car slowed in the closing stages and he managed to finish fourth while Jamie Higgs rounded out the top five in the event.

All six New Zealand drivers made the A-main but none could squeeze into the top five despite the best efforts of Cole Morrison and the WA drivers remained dominant.

Ronan Warner won the B-main for New Zealand, which was their sole victory across the competition.

The win put McDonald into third spot in the JSRA Country Super Series standings while Ogle narrowly maintained his first-place position over Watson.

Albany’s Laurie Dowsett also tasted success, winning round 7 of the WA Modified Sedans Series at Margaret River on the same Saturday.
