Huge success for wet Relay

Despite the rain, Relay for Life 2012 was anything but gloomy, with the cancer fundraiser raising a whopping $110,000 at the weekend.

Hundreds of participants from 30 teams donned their finest wet-weather costumes to keep their batons moving around Centennial Oval 24 hours straight in the relay-style walk-a-thon.

Relay for Life Albany chairwoman Colleen Tombleson said the organising committee was thrilled with how the weekend panned out.

“I am stoked with the teams that stuck out the crap weather and still smiled about it,” she said.

“Everyone seemed to have a ball, there was so much fun and laughter all weekend.

“We aimed for $100,000 and we got there and well over … I think the final count will be made in the next few weeks, but it will definitely be around the $112,000 mark.”

Ms Tombleson commended the tireless volunteers who helped make Relay for Life such a success.

“The vollies who did the food always deserve a huge mention, they do a fantastic job,” she said.

The Fairy Slappers were the highest team fundraisers, raising $18,000 for the cause, followed by runners-up the Frankland Fugitives with just over $8000.

The Frankland Fugitives were also named the best-dressed team, while Tribal Thunder had the best-dressed tent site and Sunsmart Smarties were the most Sunsmart teams.

The Fighters were judged to have the best dressed baton, and the Albany Swim Club Freestylers did the most laps over 24 hours.

Ms Tombleson said the committee was already working on a date for the next relay in 18 months time.

She said anyone keen to be part of the committee was welcome to join.
