Happy 90th birthday Lorna

JOSH NYMANAlbany Advertiser

Lorna Mullally might have just become a nonagenarian but that won’t keep her from continuing to lead an active and healthy lifestyle.

On Tuesday she celebrated her 90th birthday at Grove Park Golf Links with friends and golfing partners Elizabeth Lyons and May Hawley, who both agreed Mrs Mullally was doing exceptionally well for her age.

Mrs Mullally only took up the sport four years ago after knee surgery forced her to convert from her preferred game of tennis.

“I’d never held a golf club before in my life but then I had a lesson out here,” she said.

The former Redmond dairy farmer, who brought up five children and two grandchildren after tragically losing her son and daughter-in-law in a road accident in 1984, said she was now shooting towards the 100-year mark.

“I hope I can get to 100, that would be much more impressive because everyone is living until 90 these days,” she laughed.

Mrs Lyons said her friend still had plenty in the tank.

“She’s amazing, she has better hits than I do most of the time,” she said.

Mrs Hawley said her friend’s off-course personality was also a tribute to her longevity.

“She’s one of the loveliest ladies you could ever wish to meet,” she said.

Mrs Mullally still cares for her 49-year-old disabled son Luke and is an active churchgoer, receiving plenty of congratulatory birthday hugs on Sunday at when she fronted Holy Family Parish in Spencer Park.
