Griffins come from behind to down Raiders

Grammar Griffins pegged back a seven-point half-time deficit on their way to winning a tense round 6 Albany Basketball Association women’s A-grade clash with the Raiders’ under-18 development squad on Tuesday night.

Despite leading early in the contest, Grammar were behind at the main break after Raiders scored the last eight points of the opening half, including a long-range bomb from Jasmyne Jones to go in 17-10 ahead.

Grammar continued to chip away at the margin in the last half but it was a critical couple of moments from guard Anita Onions that changed the momentum of the game.

After helping Grammar get back within striking distance, Onions drained two long-range baskets to get her side in front and then push them four points ahead in consecutive trips down the floor.

Hard-working guard Bridgette Latham hit back-to-back baskets for Raiders before Grammar centre Ruby Bigwood added one free throw to keep the margin at three points with two minutes to play.

In a frantic final two minutes, neither side were able to conjure a score as Grammar held on 28-25 to notch their fifth win of the season.

Onions hit three triples on her way to 13 points and she was well supported by Bigwood (7 points) and Kayla Rowe (6).

Jones and Caitlin Ward chipped in with 8 points each for Raiders, while Latham (6) was again outstanding.

Meanwhile Magpies, with the bare five players, overcame Panthers 27-19, led by nine points from Jones to join Grammar with 16 points and sit second on percentage.

Flames are also on 16 points and third on percentage after their high-scoring 51-42 victory over Sparks with Zandalee Arthur (15), Jorden Tester (14) and Jenna Onions (12) helping their side to another win.

Taylah Orzel was impressive for Sparks with 16 points.
