Great start to season for PR United

PR United began the new Great Southern Soccer Association men’s open league in the best possible fashion, downing Royals 4-1 in their round 1 fixture on the one of the new pitches off North Road on Sunday afternoon.

Part of the new top-tier men’s competition, PR United were able to press forward with purpose, courtesy of a double to Stephen Berryman along with goals from Kieran Carson and Jo Ellis.

Royals had their fair share of opportunities, but Nathan Griffiths was the only player able to find the back of the net.

In Sunday’s other fixture, Caledonians thrashed Rovers 7-0 ,with Fraser Grant netting a hat-trick for the winners.

Grant was in the thick of the action up forward, while Frazer Childs scored a brace and there were single goals from Kieran Loveridge and Liam McDonald.

On Saturday, Phoenix netted five goals in a dominant second half to run out comfortable 8-2 winners over Albany-Bayswater A.

Leroy van den Dool scored twice for Phoenix, along with Jarrad Korthuis and Shannon Korthuis, while Ashley van den Dool and Jarvis Dekker also scored.

Albany-Bayswater A trailed 3-1 at half-time, with Andrew Oboh netting two goals and Jeffery Ledwith also scoring in the loss.

Meanwhile in the women’s league A competition, defending champions Denmark notched a victory in their season-opener on Friday night with a 3-0 result over Caledonians, two of the goals coming in the first half.

Phoenix sit on top of the ladder after a 5-1 triumph over Rovers, and in the other match, Royals and Polonia shared the points in a 2-2 draw.

In women’s league B results, Denmark Black slammed 17 goals past Rovers, Polonia White prevailed 5-4 against Grammar Blue, Mt Barker United defeated Grammar White 5-0, Polonia Red edged out Royals 1-0, and Denmark White drew 1-1 with Port Albany.
