The national rise of women's football has reached the Great Southern, with an expected growth of the Youth Girls' competition this season.

High school-aged girls are being urged to attend a registration day and training session next Thursday ahead of the new season, which kicks off at the start of August.

Great Southern regional football manager Tom Moir said the sport's growth would hopefully lead to two Albany-based sides to take on Denmark and Mt Barker teams across a six to 10-week competition.

He said the door was open for Great Southern Football League clubs to foster a women's team.

"Ideally we would like to see each club have a girls' side, but we are looking for two clubs to potentially host teams this season," Moir said.

He said the State selection of local footballers - Mt Barker's Tamika Coyne and Ongerup's Abby Duncan - was proof there was a pathway for girls who wanted to take the game seriously.

Tamika helped WA finish runner-up at the National Under-18 Female Kickstart Championships in Queensland late last year, while Abby was chosen for the School Sport WA AFL Girls' 16s team that will contest the national championships in Geelong next month.

A female football festival was also planned for September, where players who represented WA in their maiden victory over Victoria earlier this month would attend.

The registration day and first training will be held next Thursday between 4pm and 5pm at Centennial Oval.
