Mt Barker’s Georgie Middleton hopes one day to play for the Southern Stars after claiming five wickets at the female under-15 national cricket championships in New South Wales, which concluded earlier this month.

Georgie, a right-arm fast bowler, represented WA for the first time in the tournament in Western Sydney and has her sights set on playing for the national women’s side.

The 13-year-old was one of three regional players selected in the WA team after impressing at a City v Country trial match and opened the bowling in five of the eight games at the championships.

Georgie’s best performance came in WA’s loss to Tasmania, snaring 4-37 from seven overs, and the Mt Barker Community College student is eligible to play for the State under-15s again next season.

“It’s great playing for WA,” she said.

“I enjoy playing cricket.

“I have definitely improved my bowling and fielding, and I have been working hard on my front arm.”

During the tournament, which started on November 26, Georgiebowled 37.3 overs and claimed five wickets over eight matches at an average of 35.4.

The talented teenager made a high-score of seven runs batting in the lower order against Queensland and scored 14 runs in total from five innings.

England and Western Fury captain Charlotte Edwards also spent part of the tournament with the side in a mentoring role. Great Southern regional cricket development officer Ross Stephen said Georgie loved the game.

“She’s a proper player, she is a kid playing State cricket already from a low base,” he said.

“All aspects of the game she excels at — Georgie is an outstanding prospect.”

WA finished at the bottom of the standings without a win to their name from their seven round robin fixtures and lost their final qualification match against NSW Academy XI.
