Former Tiger shines bright at Championships

Manypeaks born and bred hockey star Kathryn Slattery has been in sparkling touch for WA at the under-21 Women’s National Hockey Championships in Adelaide.

The former Tigers player capped off a remarkable tournament to date by netting five brilliant goals against Tasmania on Sunday in the Sandgropers’ 6-0 rout of the winless Tasmanians.

Her form up forward for WA has been nothing short of exceptional as she continues her quest to make the Australian under-21 squad that will compete at the World Cup in India next year.

“I am pretty happy with how it’s going,” Slattery said on Tuesday.

“It was a tough first three games but it’s good to score a few goals.”

Talent scouts and selectors have been scouring the 11-day tournament, with one approaching Slattery to commend her on the five-goal haul.

WA began with a 2-0 loss to New South Wales last Tuesday before Slattery scored WA’s sole goal in their 4-1 loss to Queensland the following day.

In game three last Thursday, Slattery once again was again on the score sheet, netting one goal in the 3-2 victory over Victoria but WA slumped to another defeat on Sunday, going down 2-0 to Australian Capital Territory.

The 18-year-old then produced a scintillating game against Tasmania, scoring five goals to be WA’s best contributor, but their 1-0 loss to South Australia on Tuesday put their finals hopes in doubt.

WA rallied early yesterday to beat Northern Territory 3-0, pushing them into fourth place and keeping their finals hopes alive.
