Football: Ryan's a right Royal champion
Experienced Royals midfielder Ryan Patterson capped off his first premiership with the Lions by taking out the best-on-ground honours in the league grand final on Sunday.
Patterson was awarded the Alan Barnett Medal for his outstanding role through the middle of the ground, in the absence of star and close mate Chris Denney.
Speaking after the match, Patterson said it was a great individual honour but something that was made all the better by sharing premiership success with his teammates.
“This is a very proud moment at this stage of my career,” he said.
“I get a real kick out of seeing the young guys with their first premiership success and I am just proud to be a part of it all.”
Patterson’s last grand final win was achieved when playing for Kent Districts but he was unsure what the future held.
“I’m 33 now so I didn’t really expect it at this age, but I’m not sure how much footy is ahead of me,” he said.
On a day where the senior players really stood up for the Lions, Patterson relished his opportunities in the centre, collecting plenty of disposals but also produced a couple of fine marks going back into defence.
He said the Lions knew Railways would be a huge challenge and was pleased with the way his side fought out the match.
“Railways do make it tough, they are a fit young side and came in with a bit of form and nothing to lose,” Patterson said. “It was a day of grit and determination, our captain Cleve, Kayne and the Bolton boys helped us turn it around after half time and we got up.”
Despite being in and out of the side all year due to work commitments, Patterson said this one was for Denney.
“My work doesn’t allow me to train a lot so I go into most games with limited preparation,” he said.
“But I am glad to get my opportunity, seize my opportunity in the midfield and realise at my age it’s a fortunate thing.”
“Chris Denney was out and my hat goes off to him. I dedicate it to him, he is very professional, a close mate and someone who I have a lot of respect for.”
