Football: Railways reunion

CAMERON NEWBOLDAlbany Advertiser

Railways will celebrate the first premiership in the club’s history when a reunion of the 1961 team is held this Sunday at Tigerland.

Picture by Laurie Benson: Railways 1961 premiership player Colin Williamson missed the team photo but will attend the premiership reunion this Sunday at Tigerland.

Having won just three premierships in their long history, the Tigers will commemorate the occasion with special luncheon at the club before watching the 8Tigers do battle with Mt Barker in round 16 of the Great Southern Football League.

Premiership player and speedy wingman Colin Williamson said it will be a great chance to catch up with those cherished teammates.

“A lot of the guys I haven’t seen since that year, they either went off and did other things or shifted out of town,” Williamson said.

Railways, who came into the 1961 finals series as rank outsiders, eventually defeated North Albany in the grand final.

Williamson said the Tigers of 2011 could do the same.

“I follow and support Railways still, they are struggling a bit this year but if they win the next few they might have a chance,” he said.

“We had to win the last game to get into the four (in 1961), we got through and went into the grand final against red-hot favourites North Albany … everyone put in and it was good enough.”
