A fourth-generation commercial fisherman and his family are counting the cost after thieves stole 10 fish traps from King George Sound last week

The Department of Fisheries is investigating how Gavin Jackman’s 10 fish traps, used to trap leatherjackets, were stolen from near Mistaken Island, between 8pm on Monday, November 7, and 8am on Tuesday, November 8.

The season began in October and runs for three months but Mr Jackman anticipated his business would be out of action now unless the traps were returned — the first time in 90 years his family would not take part in the season.

Mr Jackman said it would cost $6000 to replace the traps if they were not safely returned, not counting the lost revenue from the season.

He said he wanted the traps returned so his family would not be out of pocket.

“It’s a major part of our income this time of year and it’s hard on the family,” he said.

“I can’t understand why someone would do such a thing to take the fish and traps and stop me from fishing and supplying my markets and to people who can’t fish.”

“It is disappointing so early in the season.”

Mr Jackman has pleaded for any information regarding the theft to be directed to the Department of Fisheries and said he was willing to offer a reward for information, which led to the return of his fish traps.

Anyone with information is urged to phone the department on 9845 7400.
