Event boosts city economy
The Australian National Aged and All Schools Cross Country Championships in Albany in August had a $2.1 million impact on the local economy, according to a City of Albany report.
An evaluation report for the event was received by councillors at an Albany City Council meeting on Tuesday night.
Athletics WA, Great Southern Grammar and Albany Race Club partnered with the City, which spent $70,000 to become host town.
Some 3017 visitors, 869 competitors and 2095 accompanying support, family and guardians and 53 officials attended.
There was a direct visitor spend of $1.7 million and people spent an average of $1491 each trip and stayed 4.53 nights.
Athletics WA administration and officials spent $27,190.
About 83 per cent of Albany businesses reported an increase in normal turnover.
According to the report, the event was economically successful and well timed as visitor numbers are low in the winter.
Albany City Mayor Dennis Wellington said the event was very successful and a “huge” number of people attended.
“It’s the first time it’s been held in regional WA; we’re very pleased, it’s been great for the whole City,” he said.
There were 12 extra flights secured to transport 655 competitors, which meant $36,750 in Albany Airport fees.
