Erosion fears for favourite beach

MARC SIMOJOKIAlbany Advertiser

Friends of Emu Point are planning to hold a closed meeting in early March to discuss erosion around Emu Point.

Friends president Ken Drummond said residents were frustrated and the rate of erosion was accelerating.

“This is a huge environmental disaster for this area and we’re trying to raise awareness. Emu Point is an icon of Albany,” he said.

Mr Drummond said when he arrived in the area 19 years ago he could walk around the point but now it had been eroded away by the ocean.

The bike trail at Emu Point has been redirected because parts of it have collapsed from the erosion.

He said the Friends of Emu Point hoped the meeting would result in residents being better informed of progress towards repairing the erosion.

Mr Drummond said the Friends of Emu Point’s long-term goal was to have the beach reclaimed and to not have any rocks visible, and he praised the new council for starting to tackle a problem that started 15 years ago.

“The erosion will keep spreading to Middleton Beach until we have a long-term solution,” he said.

“Emu Point is a world-class beach and it needs to be treated as such. We want to be able to let residents know something is happening,” he said.

To become a Friend of Emu Point, call Ken Drummond on 0427 541 033. The cost is $5.
