Crash 'could have been much worse': police

Albany police say an accident on Wednesday involving a road train and a family in a four-wheel-drive could have been much worse with only two of the five occupants receiving serious injuries.

Police and Major Crash are still investigating the accident that happened on Chester Pass Road near King River around 10am involving the road train and four-wheel-drive Landcruiser carrying a trailer with a boat.

Great Southern police traffic Sergeant Peter May said the Landcruiser was turning left into a property when the road train collided into the left-hand side of the vehicle injuring two of the five occupants.

The force of the collision caused the boat to be knocked off the trailer into the middle of the road.

Traffic was diverted on Chester Pass Road for four hours while police investigated.

Sgt May said it appeared the driver of the road train failed to acknowledge the car was turning.

The male driver and two of the three rear passengers escaped with minor injuries but the 27-year-old man in the front passenger seat suffered a broken leg, hip and jaw in the accident.

His 24-year-old partner in the rear left-hand side passenger seat also suffered a broken leg.

Both were conveyed to Albany Hospital.

Sgt May said police were still investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The road was wet but it was not raining at the time, he said.

“They were very lucky. They could have lost nearly their entire family in one terrible accident,” he said.
