A second half goal to Caledonian has pushed them into second position in the Great Southern Soccer Association men’s open standings as they produced a gutsy 2-1 win against third placed Albany-Bayswater A on Sunday afternoon.

The game opened on even terms with neither team able to produce any genuine scoring attempts until Caledonian’s Kieran Loveridge received a long ball in which he sent into the woodwork.

Albany-Bayswater A broke the deadlock in the 24th minute, courtesy of a brilliant strike from captain Cain Pietropaolo that landed in the bottom right corner.

Caledonian tied things up with a late first-half goal to Liam McDonald after a chaotic scramble after a free kick.

The opening stages of the second half mirrored the first with the first opportunity coming in the 60th minute for Albany-Bayswater A through a Jack Steel header.

In the 74th minute, Caledonian snagged a goal against the flow of play as Alessandro Pietropaolo finished off a strong run from the middle of the ground.

Albany-Bayswater A were pressing for a late goal but could not find the back of the net as Caledonian grabbed a crucial win.

The Caledonian defence was held strong by Nathan Kay while Loveridge and Frazer Childs provided plenty of spark.

Albany-Bayswater A were served well by Jack Steel and Cain Pietropaolo.

In the other men’s open results, Phoenix thumped Albany Royals 17-1 as Beau Timmer scored seven goals and Shannon Korthius had four.

Polonia beat Albany Rovers 10-0 with Jeremy Wallis and Leonhard Lehnen both bagging hat tricks.

In the men’s masters league, Denmark defeated The Vets 3-1, Sean Attig and Reid Donaldson scored goals for Denmark while Jonathan Smith was the lone goal scorer for The Vets.
