Cafe serves winning brekkie

The owner of a cafe tucked away in Torbay says she has been overwhelmed with customers since her business got the nod for serving up the best breakfast in the State last week.

The Cosy Corner Cafe claimed the breakfast category at the prestigious Gold Plate Awards at the Perth Exhibition Centre on Monday, October 20.

Owner Robyn Cotton said she was blown away even to make the finals of the breakfast and coffee shop categories in her first year entering the awards, let alone to take home the top gong, which is now on proud display in the cafe.

“It was completely unexpected,” she said.

“My feet still haven’t touched the ground.

“We entered as a learning experience to work towards being a finalist or winner in the future as sometimes you are too close to your own business and can’t see things that are obvious to someone else … it is good to get constructive criticism from someone who is not bothered about offending you.”

Ms Cotton said she was honoured to be among stiff competition for the award and gobsmacked to hear the cafe she started five years ago with no hospitality experience named the winner.

“You could have knocked me over with a feather,” she said.

Since Wednesday, when Ms Cotton and her seven staff opened the doors after returning from Perth, they have been run off their feet.

“The phone has been ringing off the wall,” she said.

“The bookings are coming in like you would not believe and people are walking in we have never seen before.

“We are having to turn people away.”
